Anselm review – Wim Wenders’s immersive documentary is a treat for art lovers

The work of the German artist Anselm Kiefer is huge in scope and breathtaking in its ambition. It’s also not the kind of thing you can pop into your local gallery to take a look at. Which is why this immersive documentary by Wim Wenders is such a gift for art lovers. Presented in both 2D and 3D (I recommend the second option), the film allows us the opportunity to absorb the epic scale of canvases that dwarf the artist until he looks like a Lowry stick figure, and the 200-acre studio complex and sculpture park in Barjac, France. The meditative experience is heightened by Wenders’s innovative use of sound: indistinct whispers flutter like bats through the cavernous spaces.
